Jay Costanza

Following retirement from a distinguished career in secondary education, Jay Costanza has been able to devote more time to a lifelong curiosity and passion for fine art. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Geneseo State College, a Master’s degree in Science Education from Nazareth College, and New York State teaching certification from Brockport State College. He also served a three-year tour in the United States Army.

Jay spent 30 years teaching secondary science in the Rochester City School District (RCSD), where he served as a mentor and lead teacher and founded and directed the RCSD Inquiry Institute. During the final five years of his career, he was part of the team that developed and operated the University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men, serving as Director of Academics.

Self-taught in both oil and pastel, Jay explores a wide range of subjects with a strong commitment to realism. His work focuses primarily on landscapes and figures integrated into natural settings, seeking to capture light, atmosphere, and quiet narrative moments. Particularly drawn to the changing light of day and the subtle moods it creates, he continues to find inspiration in the ways light shapes the character and feeling of a scene. This interest remains a central influence in his artistic process and the development of his work.

His paintings have been juried into national, regional, and local exhibitions, where they have received awards. He is an active member of several local art clubs, Pastel Society of America, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, Arts Center of Yates County, and the Pittsford Fine Art Gallery, where he finds inspiration, friendship, and enjoyment in the camaraderie of fellow artists.
